A couple was charged with distributing pamphlets to people in all religions to convince them into converting to their religion. The reason they were convicted was because their pamphlets included some words or sentences that insulted other religions. Those pamphlets were rebellious towards the other religions and has upsetted the public.

Opinion:
Distributing pamphlets to promote your religion is not wrong but when you insult other religions, that is being rude and disrespectful. We all should respect each and everyone's religion even if we do not believe in whichever religion. The couple was being inconsiderate and by insulting other religions on the pamphlets, people will think that the couple is rude and apparently has no manners. This gives people a bad impression of them.

Religion is good in the sense that it leads people to think the right way but sometimes it causes religious conflicts. I think that no matter how angry we are, we should control our anger and not pick on a fight because violence begets violence and nothing good would come out of that.

Hi Xin Ye,

your news this time is also great! Well, I generally agree with all your points, that we should respect one another's religion.

Everybody has a unique and different perspective of their religion. Confucius led the Chinese to buddhism. If you check Wikipedia, you will understand more about every religion. But the list is too long, so check it yourself. :D I would just come to the main point.

1)Adolf Hitler is one person who doesn't respect others' religion. He was notorious for his genocide of the Jews. I don't think he is correct and in fact, he is very cruel. The Jews are also humans, like him. Why did he want to annihilate them? I feel sorry for the Jews, and luckily, Adolf Hitler is dead.

2)You can probably relate religion to races. Singapore is a multi-racial society. In the early years after our independence, racial conflicts were imminent. For instance, the Maria Hertogh Riots. Maria Hertogh was actually born in a Dutch family. However, her father was captured by the Imperial Japanese Army and sent to a POW holding facility in Japan, so her mother had no choice but to give her to Aminah binte Mohammad, a malay women. A few years later, Sergeant Hertogh was released and returned to Java, where he reunited with his wife. The couple wanted Maria back but could find neither their daughter nor Aminah. They then returned to the Netherlands after requesting the Dutch authorities in Java and Singapore to try to trace the child. Finally, in September 1949, Aminah and Maria were traced to the kampong they were living in. The Dutch couple won back Maria in a court case, but that sparked the Malays' indignation. So there were riots. Luckily, there are no such riots in Singapore nowadays. What the couple has done is too much. Their action may result another riots. Now with the economic crisis, if Singapore were to have anymore riots, tourists would not dare to visit Singapore and we would become poor. Thus, I think legal action should be taken.

The riots have served Singaporeans as a reminder to respect each other's religion/race. We also have Racial Harmony Day to educate the public about religion and races. Now, Singaporeans are more polite, friendly to other races. That's a good start to create a gracious community.
